29 Dec 2025

MIS, a nonprofit organization (hereinafter “MIS”), is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a ¥10 million grant from the Mitsubishi Mirai Development Foundation (hereinafter “the Foundation”), a general incorporated foundation that provides grants to educational institutions and related organizations dedicated to nurturing the next generation of young people and implements programs to disseminate the outcomes of such initiatives widely throughout society. This grant has been awarded in support of MIS’s initiatives related to the Japan–ASEAN Youth Summit 2026.

The MIS educational program has been selected for funding under “Category 2,” one of the five categories established by the Foundation. The grant period will begin with an initial phase from July 2025 to March 2026, with continuation planned in principle for a total of three years, through fiscal year 2027.

■ Program Overview

The Japan–ASEAN Youth Summit 2026 is an international educational program that brings together high school students from Japan and ASEAN member states, including Timor-Leste, for a total of 11 countries. Participants engage seriously in discussions on how to realize a better future. The program consists of two components: (1) the “Japan Round,” conducted in Japan, and (2) the Youth Summit, held in Malaysia.

(1) Japan Round
During the Japan Round, conducted in collaboration with professors from the University of Tokyo and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, participants deepen their understanding of the historical, economic, and social contexts of ASEAN countries. Through this process, they consider and discuss policies aimed at addressing social challenges shared between Japan and ASEAN. Over the course of six sessions, participants cultivate an international perspective and develop the ability to articulate and shape their own ideas. Upon completion of the program, selected participants advance to the next stage, the Youth Summit in Malaysia.

(2) Youth Summit
At the Youth Summit held in Malaysia, representatives from each country are divided into subcommittees focusing on either education or disaster risk reduction. Through lectures, site visits, and workshops, participants formulate policy proposals, which are scheduled to be submitted to the Government of Japan and the ASEAN Secretariat. Throughout the Youth Summit, participants are exposed to diverse cultures and perspectives while developing practical problem-solving skills and teamwork.

This program aims to provide high school students, who will shape the future, with an opportunity to engage in cross-border dialogue and take action.
